Introduction

What are Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)?

Sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs, are passed on via sexual contact from one person to the other as they exchange bodily fluids.

While STDs are caused by specific bacteria and viruses, examples include Trichonomas Vaginalis, Treponema Pallidium (Syphilis), Neisseria Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia Trachomatis, Hepatitis C And Hepatitis B, Herpes, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Syphilis Hepatitis, Herpes Simplex Virus Type I and II, Treponema Palladum (syphilis) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

What should I do to prepare for STD Testing?

Like the symptoms, the screening for STDs will be different for men and women. Male patients will usually need to provide a urine sample and a blood sample, while female patients will be given a swab test and a blood test. A vaginal swab may also be collected for those who are not on their period.

For the best results, it’s recommended that you hold your urine for about 3-4 hours before providing a urine sample for an accurate diagnosis. During the consultation, we may ask you about your recent experiences on why you think you may have a sexually transmitted disease.

Hold urine for 3-4 hours before the appointment. This is recommended for an accurate diagnosis.

Avoid cleaning off any genital areas producing abnormal discharge. This might be required for swab sample.

If you are undergoing menstruation, inform our staff to reschedule the swab tests as it affects the accuracy of the test results.
