Introduction

Why are STD Treatments important?

The best way to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is to get tested for them if you meet any risk factors or as a part of your annual health. If you’ve been diagnosed with an STD, your priority should be to have it treated. We offer STD treatments to effectively treat your condition.

STDs and its Treatments

Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea

STD Treatments for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea and can be done through the use of oral antibiotics or injected antibiotics.

Chlamydia is caused by a type of bacteria, Chlamydia Trachomatis. These bacteria can be transmitted through sexual contact by both men and women. If you’ve contracted this STD, the most common symptoms include colourless discharge, painful urination, and itching.

Also related: Vaginal Infections

Gonorrhoea is also caused by a bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhea or gonococcus. Similar to chlamydia, it is a type of bacterial STD and usually has minimal symptoms other than yellowish discharge.

Non-Gonococcal Urethritis

This is actually not one specific disease but a group of infections which all cause urethritis. Urethritis is simply an inflammation of the urethra, the tube that is responsible for allowing urine to flow from the bladder out of the body.

Although it often goes undetected and untreated but without proper treatment, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease for women. For men, it will cause testis inflammation which will lead to infertility.

This condition can also be treated with antibiotics. For more severe or complicated cases, we may prescribe a longer than a typical course of antibiotics.

Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (type 1 or type 2). While it is passed through sexual contact, it but may be dormant before causing any symptoms. The exact cause of triggering the virus to show active symptoms is not well known, but potential causes include stress, a lack of sleep, illness, and a compromised immune system.

Genital herpes was typically thought to be caused by Type 2 while Oral herpes is caused by Type 1. Nonetheless, genital herpes is understood to be caused by both types due to changes in the virus over time.

While herpes cannot be cured, it can be managed with antiviral tablets. For people who have frequent outbreaks, they may benefit from long-term medication that may help to suppress the virus.

Genital Warts

Genital warts are one of the most common STIs in both Singapore and the rest of the world. The cause of this condition is the Human Papilloma Virus(HPV) Genital warts can be transmitted through close skin contact, usually with intercourse. You can get rid of warts with the use of topical medication, freezing lesions with liquid nitrogen, or even radiofrequency ablation by a physician.

While contracting HPV increases the risk of a person developing anal, throat, vagina, and oral cancer, it is also responsible for causing 70% of cervical cancers in women today. Yet, the risk of contracting HPV is significantly reduced by having the vaccination.

Molluscum Contagiosum

This condition is transmitted through sexual contact and is caused by a poxvirus. It can appear anywhere on the skin including the genital areas. The lesions that appear display as pearly-white or flesh-covered small lumps with an indentation. These are contagious and spread easily but benign. They can be treated with cream, liquid nitrogen, or surgical extraction by a physician.

Trichomoniasis

This is an STI that is caused by a parasite known as Trichomonas Vaginalis. The parasite is commonly found infecting the vagina and urethra of women. Men will carry the parasite in their urethra, the tip of penis, or prostate gland

Treatment includes either oral antibiotics or pessaries.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

HIV is the most feared infection that does not have a cure at the present time. However, there are treatments available to control the infection that allows many people to lead a normal life.

Prevention is the best way to reduce the risk of contracting HIV. Talk to your doctor about prevention (HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) or treatment (HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) as needed. If you suspect any recent sexual exposures, you may discuss with your doctor for a quick simple test for HIV.

Syphilis

Syphilis was largely eradicated but has reappeared over the past 10 years. Caused by a bacteria known as Treponema Pallidum, there are four stages of infection. If left untreated, it can lead to serious health complications such as nerve and heart conditions. After a positive diagnosis, the doctor will be able to provide injectable antibiotics for an effective treatment regimen.

Please remember that it’s recommended to abstain from sexual intercourse until finishing antibiotic treatment for the best results.
