Introduction

What are Menstrual Disorders?

Menstrual disorders are defined as abnormalities in the menstrual cycle of a woman. Any woman can develop menstrual disorders such as changes in the timing of the menstrual period, sudden heavy flow, and an unexpected volume of menstruation.

Irregular periods are also under this disorder. If you are experiencing delays in your period, not having your period at all, vaginal spotting, or unusual bleeding when it’s not the time of the month yet, you are likely developing menstrual problems. 

Causes

What are the causes of menstrual disorders in Singapore?

Menstrual disorders occur for a couple of reasons. Some of the common causes are early pregnancy, an increase in body mass index, endocrine issues, endometriosis, changes in lifestyle and diet, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), fibroids, or in worst cases, uterine and cervical cancers. However, it is best to consult a doctor in order to understand and find out the right underlying cause. 

There are normal cases when a woman develops menstrual disorders. Menstrual cycle changes can happen if the woman is at her menopausal stage or if it’s her first menstrual period.

Are menstrual disorders caused by cancer?

There are numerous causes of menstrual disorders. Yes, it is occasionally caused by cancer and the only way to find that out is by consulting a healthcare professional. 

 You need to make sure that you are doing proper tests and screenings to assess your condition. Most doctors will perform an updated pap smear test, pelvic ultrasound, or a biopsy extraction. The testing to be performed will depend on the initial diagnosis of the doctor.  

 The earlier you find out your disorder, the better the result since you can still do preventions and extra care to avoid worsening the condition. 

How are menstrual disorders diagnosed in Singapore?

Initially, your doctor will ask for your personal and family medical history. This is to trace your medical records and the possibility of the disorder being inherited. The doctor will also do a series of abdominal examination and pelvic assessment.  

 In other cases, you might be advised to undergo a pap smear test, hormonal blood test, and pelvic ultrasound to assess the disorder further.  While there are treatments for menstrual disorders and it depends on your diagnosis. Your doctor will likely recommend taking oral medications to normalize the flow of your menstruation. 

Treatment

How can menstrual disorders be treated in Singapore?

By receiving proper treatments, your normal menstrual cycle can be brought back. However, it all depends on the diagnosis you have. If the disorder is reversible, there is a higher chance for you to have a normal menstrual cycle again.
